Yamel Cucuy is the story of a girl on the precipice of adulthood, contending with the physical and metaphysical violence of borders. Yamel is hunted by immigration agents while haunted by specters from Mexican folklore. On the shadowy frontier between life and death, she forges her own spirit of courage and wisdom. Set to an original score of indigenous percussion, Yamel Cucuy blends sophisticated puppetry with live actors and draws upon frightening folk tales and modern horror movies to create a terrifying psychological landscape of pitfalls both legal and spiritual.

Our bilingual plays cross linguistic and cultural boundaries towards the heart of the imagination, where artists and audiences examine how oppressive power structures work and how they can be overcome. Glass Half Full Theatre began making original work in Austin, Texas in 2011, addressing complex problems through an optimistic lens. We typically create one original work each year while presenting/ touring/ performing our existing works. Our local performances have served over 45,000 audience members in Austin, Texas. Our touring performances have visited 30 states, and performed for more than 100,000 people at 50+ performing arts venues across the nation. For the past five years, our work is exclusively bilingual (Spanish/ English) as we have embraced centering Latinx creators and audience.
